A critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-11386, CVSS 9.0) was disclosed affecting Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro Client (ubuntu-advantage-tools), allowing attackers to execute arbitrary code with root privileges via a spoofed or tampered contract server response. Due to the potential for full system compromise across cloud environments, immediate patching is required.

About CVE-2026-11386

The issue originates from the Ubuntu Pro Client’s handling of contract server responses, where the directives.suites[] and directives.aptURL fields are written into APT source files using Python’s str.format() with no escaping and no newline filtering. This allows embedded newlines to inject malicious APT directives. Additionally, the unvalidated additionalPackages[] field passes directly into a root-executed apt-get install command. By sending a spoofed or tampered contract server response, attackers can inject arbitrary APT sources and trigger package installations as root, potentially achieving full system takeover. The attack requires network-level access with high complexity, such as compromised internal infrastructure or intercepted connections using trusted certificates.

Affected Systems

The following components are affected: ubuntu-advantage-tools and ubuntu-pro-client across all Ubuntu LTS releases from 14.04 through 26.04. The vulnerable versions include all releases prior to the patched versions listed below. The Ubuntu Pro Client is preinstalled on Ubuntu Server and auto-attaches on cloud Ubuntu Pro images, making the exposure particularly broad across cloud workloads. Ubuntu 25.10 (end-of-life) received no patch.

The advisory USN-8555-1 also addresses two companion vulnerabilities: CVE-2026-9494 (Pro bearer token exposure in command-line arguments) and CVE-2026-12391 (symlink handling flaw in log collection).

Users should upgrade ubuntu-advantage-tools to the following patched versions via standard system update (apt update && apt upgrade):

– Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: 37.2ubuntu0.1

– Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: 37.2ubuntu~24.04.1

– Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: 37.2ubuntu~22.04.1

– Ubuntu 20.04 LTS: 37.1ubuntu0~20.04.1

– Ubuntu 18.04 LTS: 37.1ubuntu0~18.04.1

– Ubuntu 16.04 LTS: 37.1ubuntu0~16.04.1

– Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: 19.7ubuntu0.1

No workaround exists for unpatched systems. Patches for Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04, and 14.04 require Ubuntu Pro with Legacy Support.

Risk Impact

At the time of writing, no public proof-of-concept exists, and no exploitation in the wild has been reported. Regardless, the severity and ease of exploitation once the prerequisite network position is achieved make this vulnerability high risk, especially in internet-facing cloud deployments where the Ubuntu Pro Client auto-attaches.

Successful exploitation could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code as root, install malicious packages and persist access, and potentially pivot across the environment, leading to service disruption, data exposure, or full infrastructure compromise. The scope change in the CVSS vector (S:C) indicates that compromise extends beyond the vulnerable component itself.
