This Pride Month, we’re honored to spotlight DeMarcus Gilliard, Senior Account Executive at Orca Security based in LA, and his incredible contribution to our organization. DeMarcus shares more about his role at Orca, his personal journey, challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and his hopes for a more inclusive future.
Can you tell us about yourself and your role in the company?
I serve as a Senior Account Executive at Orca Security, covering Southern California, Arizona, and Hawaii. My role involves engaging with clients to provide them with innovative security solutions that protect their digital assets. With a background serving as a USMC Officer on active duty and experience navigating complex environments, I bring resilience and determination to my work every day.
DeMarcus also presents our Orca Insights series, a collection of short videos for CISOs and cloud security leaders to gain a deeper understanding of cloud security concepts and technologies.
What does Pride Month mean to you personally?
For DeMarcus, Pride Month holds deep personal significance. It’s a time to reflect on the progress made, the obstacles overcome, and the work that still needs to be done. “Pride is about celebrating our journey, our struggles, and our triumphs,” DeMarcus said.
How has your identity shaped your personal and professional life?
DeMarcus’s identity has had a profound impact on his personal and professional life. Coming out later in life taught him the power of resilience and self-acceptance. Being gay has also cultivated empathy and keen observation skills, which he now considers his “superpowers” in navigating both personal and professional relationships.
However, DeMarcus acknowledges that challenges persist. “I’ve had experiences where someone who didn’t know I was gay completely disparaged the community right in front of me,” he shared. “These moments validate why many LGBTQIA+ people remain closeted and why Pride is an important moment of collective reflection.”
How do you think workplaces can become more inclusive and supportive of LGBTQ+ employees?
DeMarcus advises to go beyond simply checking boxes and instead demonstrate authentic support. “Vocalize your support and challenge discriminatory behaviors and policies when you see them. Your support can make a significant difference in creating a safe and inclusive environment,” he said. This includes implementing inclusive policies, providing resources and support networks, and actively promoting a culture of acceptance and respect. By taking concrete actions to support LGBTQ+ employees, organizations can create environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to bring their whole selves to work.
What advice would you give to LGBTQ+ individuals who are early in their careers?
For LGBTQ+ individuals early in their careers, DeMarcus recommends seeking workplaces that celebrate diversity through actions, not just words. “Surround yourself with supportive colleagues and mentors, and don’t be afraid to seek out environments where you can thrive without hiding your true self.”
Envisioning Equality: Hopes for a More Inclusive Future
Looking to the future, DeMarcus envisions a world where equality and acceptance are the norm. “I hope to see a world where LGBTQ+ individuals are treated with dignity and respect, without the need for constant justification of our existence,” he shares. This vision requires ongoing efforts from individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. DeMarcus expresses his gratitude for Orca Security’s commitment to this vision, stating, “I’m very happy that Orca Security contributes to the realization of that future.”
