Data warehousing solutions, such as Snowflake, have quickly gained popularity and are vital to organizations for handling data in a scalable, flexible, and optimized way. Since data is centralized and stored on a single platform, this greatly improves data manageability and reduces overall complexity. However, as with all data storage, data breaches are a constant threat, which is why the importance of security cannot be overemphasized.
This is why the Orca Cloud Security Platform now offers Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) for Snowflake, detecting and alerting to sensitive data in the Snowflake data lake, from the same platform that you use to secure your cloud provider environments. Available in beta today with general availability expected later this month, the enhancement gives teams the needed visibility to ensure that data stores comply with the highest security standards and align with data security policies set for data stored on their other cloud environments.
Why add DSPM to Snowflake?
Snowflake’s usage has been growing rapidly due to its highly scalable and cloud-native architecture, which allows organizations to efficiently manage and analyze large volumes of data. By separating storage and compute, Snowflake enables flexible scaling that optimizes performance and cost. The rise of AI adoption has further increased the need for data warehouses such as Snowflake, with AI models typically needing large amounts of data to perform effectively, increasing the complexity and scale of data that organizations need to manage.
However, as organizations collect and store increasing amounts of personal, financial, and business-critical data, the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches grows. Data breaches can expose sensitive information such as personal data, financial records, and intellectual property. This data can then be exploited for identity theft, fraud, and other cybercrimes, putting both individuals and organizations at risk. Therefore it is very important to roll out security for your Snowflake data lake.
What DSPM capabilities does Orca offer for Snowflake?
Once connected to a Snowflake database, Orca searches for sensitive information using over 90 built-in data classifiers, covering categories like PII, PHI, and PCI. In addition, customers can create their own custom identifiers using regular expressions, enabling them to create their own data classifications. Any sensitive information is automatically flagged, so teams are aware of its presence and can ensure that it is appropriately secured or removed. Orca currently supports sensitive data detection for Snowflake managed databases (transactional relational databases).
How does Orca work with Snowflake?
To start scanning, you will need to connect to your Snowflake account from the Orca Platform and provide read permissions to the databases you want to scan. Once connected, Orca will start performing weekly scans searching all managed databases for sensitive data.
Other ways Orca integrates with Snowflake
In addition to providing data security for Snowflake, Orca also allows you to export cloud security telemetry data from the Orca Platform into Snowflake, providing centralized data access and analysis. By combining Orca data with data from other tools, teams can run their own queries and analysis using existing workflows, leading to better forensics, faster analysis and cost savings.
About the Orca Cloud Security Platform
The Orca Cloud Security Platform identifies, prioritizes, and remediates security risks and compliance issues across the multi-cloud environments of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Oracle Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud. A natively built CNAPP, Orca offers an agentless-first approach powered by its patented SideScanning™ Technology, which provides full coverage and comprehensive risk detection of your cloud estate. Orca consolidates many different point solutions, such as CSPM, CWPP, DSPM, KSPM, API Security and more, in a single comprehensive platform.
